2020 has been a crazy year and challenging in more ways than not. One of the more rewarding challenges was illustrating a children's book for the preacher of my church back home.
I don't really consider myself an illustrator. I like to draw and sometimes I spend a lot of time on some of the images I make, but I tend to stay away from drawing a series of related images because it's out of my comfort zone. I took lots of drawing classes but never tacked on the extra classes to double major in illustration. Sculpture and printmaking were more my speed. With that being said, I was hesitant to take on this project.
Below are the 14 drawings I came up with for each paragraph of the text I was given. The story is about a little boy who grew up without much money who enjoyed walking down the streets at Christmas time to look at all of the lights. When he grows up, he decorates his own house as a gift to children like him who's only gifts on Christmas are sometimes gazing at the lights in their neighborhoods.
